Jeanette Sawyer Cohen, PhD
Dr. Sawyer Cohen (PhD, MPhil, MS, PMH-C, IMH-E®) is a Columbia University trained Psychologist and Parent Coach with extensive experience helping parents and children. A certified Perinatal Mental Health specialist, she supports women’s concerns including trauma, anxiety, depression, and stress in the perinatal period and beyond. As a result of therapy, women report feeling less symptomatic and generally more connected to their own bodies and their intuition. In psychotherapy Dr. Sawyer Cohen employs an integrative approach tailored to each individual that draws from an in-depth study of developmental, relational, and somatic interventions. Recent clinical interests include studying and integrating aspects of Internal Family Systems and Mentalization-Based Treatment. Dr. Sawyer Cohen is experienced with children who struggle with self-regulation and may be described as bright, sensitive, anxious, reactive, or intense. As a Parent Coach, she partners with parents to understand their child's unique profile and to develop a plan to address both the underlying issues and any concerning behavior. Following postgraduate training in dyadic therapies such as Parent-Infant Psychotherapy and DIR/Floortime, she became a CPS Certified Provider to help parents and children solve problems using an evidence-based, time-limited, proactive and collaborative approach. Dr. Sawyer Cohen is experienced with highly sensitive, gifted, and “2e” profiles, and has worked with neurodivergent children and their parents for over 20 years. Endorsed as an Infant Mental Health Specialist at the Clinical Mentor level, she has supervised and taught child development students from undergraduate to post-graduate, at institutions including Teachers College, Barnard, New York Medical College, The City College of New York, and currently as an Adjunct Professor at Adelphi University’s Institute for Parenting, where she teaches a year-long postgraduate program in Parent Education and Parent Guidance. Recognized for her expertise in parent-child interactions, Dr. Sawyer Cohen has been involved in research, advocacy, policy, and consulting in areas such as the global toy market.
